SEO Tips for Photographers

Let's dive right in, shall we! I like to keep things simple, when I think of SEO I think of google juice - all the ways that we can keep google happy and make it want to share our work with the world. The main goal is to prove to Google that we are the experts and want to help people get their questions answered. While there are many different ways to do this, I recommend doing as many things as possible to keep google happy with you. What I don't want is for you to get overwhelmed and stressed, so please just take these tips one at a time and work on them as you can. Every little bit helps.

Please note these tips are both for your website and your blog, if they are a bit over your head I am working on a very basic intro to SEOs to help get you started and will post it here once it is finished.

3 Tips for your website or blog

  1. Do not keyword stuff - I'll admit, when I first started my photography business 10 years ago I thought if I put as many keywords as possible on a page I could rank for them all. Ha! Boy was I wrong, what I have learned over time is that this will cannibalize your site, not letting you rank for any of the keywords. So, I recommend having 1 or 2 keywords per page that you are trying to rank on Google.

  2. Keep keywords relevant - Google is no dummy, you can't try to rank for "Montana wedding photographer" on a page that is all about pet photography. Make sure that the keywords are relevant to the info that is on that page, the same goes for your blogs.

  3. Update your photos - Girl! We both know there are tons of beautiful images hidden on your hard drives from last season... The world needs to see them, and Google wants them, more than you know! Keeping your photos updated and relevant with the proper tagging will show Google that your site is not collecting dust and that you want the world to see it!
